I recently heard that Nepal now allows dual citizenship. Can anyone confirm this?
The Nepali born Russian businessman Mahato wants to invest in Nepal and has requested the Nepali government to allow dual citizenship so as it to make it easier.
Anyone with more information?

All those living abroad who wants dual citizenships should raise $2 each, and send it to Nepal. Then those leaders will immediately pass the bill on dual citizenships.. otherwise, they will never do it. Don't just expect Dr. Upendra to bear all the costs.

That is just a rumor. I don't think dual citizenship is ever going to happen in Nepal because..thanks to our neighbour India who has over a billion population living right next door to Nepal. As soon as the government of Nepal announces the dual citizenship, all the stupid Bihaaris and what not will migrate to Nepal and start buying properties. Within a year or two, they'll turn Nepal into a part of India. For that reason and that reason only, our government shouldn't allow dual citizenship. I know it is not easy for not having dual citizenship in Nepal but our Sovereignty is more important than convenience. JAI NEPAL...

Srijan....thanks for the racist comments but we are talking out dual citizen ship to Nepal-US not nepal-india besides if the indians want to buy property they will have to produce proper docs to do so...and if the nepalese govt employees are corrupt (to let them buy property without proper paper) its our fault not somebody elses

Bihar is not a problem.... it can be excluded, exactly the way Indian did.

India allows dual citizenships to NRI's (Non Resident Indians) living only in certain advanced countries, such as UK, USA, Canada, Australia, France etc. But in that list Nepal is not included.

Hence based on same logic Nepal can do same as well. Then biharis will be excluded. And for those Nepalese living in Darjeeling, Deharadun, Sikkim and so on, they don't need dual citizenship to Nepal. Nepal is so close and there is an OPEN BORDER between Nepal and India.

mucho_fiesta,

You are sooooooo stupid and ignorant and you're the one calling me racist. Ey MURAKH... do you expect the governmnet of Nepal to issue dual citizenship to ONLY Nepalese living in the US (with US passport) ? LOL.....like that really going to happen ? What about the nepalese living other countries and even India ? India already allows dual citizenship and as soon as Nepal allows dual citizenship, they'll all come to Nepal and apply fir citizenship and start buying properties. That is all I'm saying.

Yes, Nepali government once announced that it will amend laws so that dual citizenship can be given to non-residental nepalese. It can be opened for only with certain countries in mutual understanding between them.

instead of issuing citizenship, the better option is to ammend the laws that allow a non-residental Nepalese to travel and invest in Nepal in as easy way as a residental Nepalese can.

the government should be aware while doing so since dual citizenship can be misused heavily.

Thaha_Panyen Ji,

Are you expecting misuse only in Nepal ? What about in India and so many other countries ? It will not have negative impact. It will always help improve economy.

Karmarana's plan sounds logical. On top of that, the government of Nepal should penalize the NRNs (Non Resident Nepalese) with Foreign Passport and wants to apply for dual citizenship at least ONE PETI (Rs. 100,000) for giving up Nepalese citizenship on the first place.

those who have given up Nepalese citizenships for developed countries seem to be worried here. well economy might get boosted, but what about national integrety and sovereignty? want to be red indians? reminded that those who have money also have powers hence they rule us/run our government.

i was just indicating the possibility of misuse if the government opens it for so many countries without proper homework, just under pressure of those countries/organizations in those countries.

For those nepalese who have already taken up US citizenships, the dual citizenship in Nepal will not work. Sorry.

The reason is, even if Nepal allows dual citizenship, USA doesn't allow it. Nepalese US citizens have already surrenderd their nepali citizenships, because of this US law. So only option for such NRNs from USA is, they may return to Nepal later and take up nepalese citizenship after paying lump sum money, of course by US law they will have to surrender US citizenship then, i mean to be legally clean from USA perspective.

Therefore, while setting dual citizenship in Nepal the laws of other countries should be considered as well.

Nepalese who have already taken up US/UK/Canada citizenship should still be allowed to apply for dual citizenship with a fee of EK KHOKAA (Rs. 1, 0000, 000).

Well, what I mean is, US citizen of nepalese origin might go back to Nepal and get the Nepalese citizenship back after paying whatever amount... but according to law of USA, you cannot do so.. US now doesn't allow it's citizen to hold dual citizenship.

Nepalese Canadians can go back to Nepal and get back the nepalese citizenship after paying the said amount, and yet they will can hold both canadian and Nepaelse citizenships, because Canada allows dual citizenship.

I dont care much about Nepali citizenship however I'm very much willing to go to a great extent to get an Indian citizenship. Does anyone here have any experience obtaining Indian citizenship in addition to the US or Canadian citizenship ? Advices will be greatly appreciated.

Here is some information on Dual citizenship from the U.S. State Department:

"A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.

Intent can be shown by the person's statements or conduct. The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause. Claims of other countries on dual national U.S. citizens may conflict with U.S. law, and dual nationality may limit U.S. Government efforts to assist citizens abroad. The country where a dual national is located generally has a stronger claim to that person's allegiance.

However, dual nationals owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country. They are required to obey the laws of both countries. Either country has the right to enforce its laws, particularly if the person later travels there. Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. citizenship. Most countries permit a person to renounce or otherwise lose citizenship.

See, you go to USA, get gren card, then write citizenship test, then before taking up US citizenship you MUST lose your Nepali citizenship. You surrender nepalese citizenship then only you become US citizen. Now if you go back and apply for Nepali citizenship, you applied voluntarily and in ehich case by law you automatically lose US citizenship. Sorry DUAL citizenship is not allowed.

Dual citizenship holders are still there... but they are old people who did so long time ago.. they banned that after 1970s or 1980s somewhere, I am not sure.
