To tackle GRE, the first thing is to know where you are at the moment and then prepare accordinly filling the voids. At first, download POWER PREP CD from ETS-GRE website (or get it from someone who has appeared in GRE; once you register for GRE, ETS will send you POWER PREP CD) and take the first test. Analyze your score and prepare accordinly.

For me, verbal section was really hard nut to break and I had to con about 2000 weird words from Barron's GRE list. So, the only way to get good score in verbal is to improve the vocabulary. Try to be an avid reader, even if you have not been in the past. Be diverse in your readings. This will not only help in writing essays in the analytical section but will also help you in the verbal section.

For Quantitavie section, practice is the key to success. Try as many problems as you can. Try to learn mathematical trics how to tackle the problem quickly. Try to do the computation in the mind than on paper. In my experience, questions are not tough in this section rather they are tricky. It's the time limitation that kills you.

For analytical writing section, you can find all the essay topic at ETS-GRE website. Lots of sample essays are online too. Practice as many essays as you can or at least plan for all the perspective essay topic before the exam.

The trick: It's absolutely essential that you get first few answers(5-6) correct to get a good score. If you get the first few questions wrong, then even if you do better on the latter part, you will not improve your score that much. So, spend little more time in the first few questions. For every questions you make right, the next questions become harder. So, don't worry if you are getting difficult questions; you might as well be making everything right!!

Resouces-
a) GRE preparation material (book and CDs) from : Princeton, Kaplan, Barron's, Cambridge, Peterson.
b) GRE practice materials from ETS-GRE website (www.gre.org)
c) Other online resources -
http://www.number2.com
http://www.testprepreview.com/gre_practice.htm
http://www.testmagic.com/

Note: ETS is launching the revised GRE General Test in the fall of 2007. So, it will be wise to take the test before that date because the most the test materials available at the moment are for the current test pattern.

Hi,

I took the GRE recently. I mostly prepared from Barron's GRE prep book. It teaches you lot of tricks that are helpful (esp in the quant. section) and also provides several sample tests. I didn't have much time for preparation, so for the verbal part I tried to go over the high frequency word list a little bit (although its almost impossible to memorize all of those). As a matter of fact, there were few words on the actual exam that were on the list. Try learning the common roots of words. This will help you eliminate some choices, in case you have no clue what the word means.
For the verbal section, I think the best way to prepare is to read a lot of stuff in different subject areas. Try to look up unfamiliar words, learn the meaning and how they are used in a sentence. Also, try to practice writing the two essays. As far as I know, the topics for the essays just come from the large pool thats posted in the GRE (ETS) website. The ETS website is also a good resource for finding test prep material that you can download for free.
For the quant section, get as much practice as you can. If you're a li'l rusty on the concepts/formulas then you need to spend some time learning those. Although the problems included in the test are all related to the stuff that you did in high school, the questions can be pretty tricky sometimes. So you need to get some practice to learn to tackle those problems well. During the actual exam, be sure to pace yourself well. Its good to try getting the first couple of questions correct, but if you're stuck on a problem then just move on to the next one.
As an end note, try to take atleast one practice test to see how you do timing wise. I can tell you from my experience, it'll be very helpful.

Well, I've heard about GRE, GRE, GRE....and GRE ...many times while my undergraduate study (still undergrad. but last sem.). To try to get admit for recognized universities in US or to get scholarships in universities we need GRE.
My question here to the experts is.."how long exactly does it take to fully prepare for this test?"
if within 6 months.....how much time should we spend for GRE per day?
if winthin 1 yr..........how much time should we spend for GRE per day?

thanks

How long does it take to fully prepare for this test?
I don't know if there is a specific answer to this question. Since GRE is to supposed to be an aptitude test, the amount of preparation should not really matter (at least in theory), not to say that you should not prepare for this test. If you have taken SAT, you should already have some idea about how you are going to perform on this test. The scores on your SAT and GRE do not change drastically, unless you went through a miraculous change during those years. I myself spent little less than a week to study for the test, although I wish I could have spent more time preparing for it. But even if I had started preparing 6 months ago, I don't think I would have changed my score that much.

The key to get higher score in GRE is to get first (5-7) questions correct. So spend more time on those questions. And, other important thing to remember is not to make a seriies of questions incorrect. That will also pull down your score.

If you are planning to go to grad school for the fall of 2007, you should be taking your GRE soon.

Everybody says Barrons Boot is the best but however I recommend you guys to get the latest edition of Barrons Book. I had 2000 Edition Barrons book and I gave GRE exam on 2004 I could not do well. Remember folks GRE is also evolving like bacteria and virusess so make sure you have all recent BOOKS and SUPPLIES.

Best of Luck

If you ask me, I think its already kinda late to think about GRE if you're applying for Grad schools starting Fall 2007. From what I have found out , most schools have their application deadlines as early as second week of December (although lot of them don't have it until late December or even early January). The latest that you could take the GRE, inorder to have your scores in before the deadlines, would be around second week of December (and I personally think thats pushing things a little too far). The scores reports take about 2-3 weeks, after you've taken the exam, to get mailed to the schools. So if u are serious about applying and confident that you can prepare within few weeks, then you should register for the test asap.
As for the prep materials, I don't think any GRE books or any other preparation course guarantee you an extraordinary score. You can practice from any book as long as the practice exercises and sample exams in there reflect the current format for the test. The format for GRE and any other standardized test changes regularly (the format for GRE is changing from 2007). So make sure you're familiar with what the test is going to look like.
Like someone mentioned in one of the replies, GRE measures your aptitude. It shouldn't matter how much time you spend practicing (I may be wrong). But if you think you're weak in some area thats being tested, you should put some extra effort in preparing for that section. Otherwise you should be fine.

I got a question. How many times can you take a GRE test in a year? I mean how many attempts do you have in a year to take the test?
My second query is, how long do we have to wait to retake the test if we are not happy with the score obtained?
thnx in advance

From what I remember, you can take the test only once a month. I don't know if there is any rule that bars you from taking more than a certain number of time in a year. So, at most you can take the test 12 times a year (Don't quote me on this one though).

Hi friends,

This page about gre seems to be really useful. I graduated from USA and giving my GRE tomorrow from Nepal for Graduate school. Please share your knowledges and suggestions what should I concentrate mostly becuase this is really confusing. Do all graduate colleges in USA requires GRE? if not which ones? if yes, what scores? I am looking for grad colleges which dont require gre scores. I hope I can get the good score tomorrow, if not I have to see college without gre.

Hoping to hear from you soon

Sight.

I think you can take the test once every calendar month. So even if you took a test on Nov 29th lets say, you should be able to take the test again during the first week of December. Its better to double check this with the ETS people. I think they only allow you to take the test twelve times every year (Although I wonder if anyone would go that far).
Most of the Universities require GRE schools these days. I have yet to hear about one that doesn't require atleast a general test. However, a lot of schools (usually the less competitive ones) don't have a minimum score for GRE and taking the test itself would be sufficient.
Also, it depends on what program you're applying to.If you're applying to Science/ Engineering related graduate programs, then you should aim to do well on the quant section. Otherwise, if you're going for Social Sciences or Humanities, then verbal score becomes more important. Although I don't really know the cut offs for these. Maybe someone else could answer this.
I think TOEFL is far easier than GRE. The vocab section in GRE is pretty tough to crack and it even makes people, who are native english speakers, sweat. However, I think its comparable to SAT general test.
