Dear all,

DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) office is asking for a letter from DHS (Dept of Home Land Seurity) that indicates that you have been working for an employer before renewing/applying for a Drivers license. Do you guys know about this? If yes, does anyone know what forms do i need to fill out. This legislation was passed Jan 1st 2010.

Thanks,

Hey Admirer,
I am under OPT and i renewed my driver license yesterday by using my EAD card. Nobody asked me other documents---

I don't know ur current status but it might help.

Admirer,

Yup, its a new DMV rule. Its designed to combat terrorism and fraud by toughening ID paperwork nationwide. (http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2009/dec/21/drivers-license-more-complicated-to-renew-after/)

Basically they are trying to know/keep track of your legal status. If you are a current student then updated SEVIS I-20 should be enough. But, if you just graduated then you can renew your license only from the day your EAD card is active.

Just follow this link...it will walk you through.

Good Luck!!

Admirer,

Driver license issued just for 1.5 years? Just curious which state does that?

Coming back to your query, as per my understanding your wife is not eligible for SSN. Things might be little different esp after this new law. However, if you submit the following documents she MIGHT be able to renew it. Original Passport, H1B visa of a spouse, I-797, proof of residence, any other form of ID she may have, and a letter from SSN office stating 'your wife is not eligible for SSN' don't quote me on this coz different states require different documents for renewal.

Also check the dmv website( www.dmv.org) and contact your local dmv authorities for assistance.

Each state has own rules and regulations as well it depends upon the DMV officer too.

yes, i had my driver license renewed for just 1 year. Now basically the expiration date of driver's license is the day that you I-20 will expire to students.
