The problem with democracy in Nepal is that nobody has learnt that democracy comes with a lot of responsibility. Democracy does NOT mean breaking side bars in Ratna Park when there is a fuel price hike. Democracy does not mean horse trading every three months just to remain in the power. And Democracy does not mean killing poor and helpless people to show your muscle. Democracy means lots of responsibility - as a citizen and as a politician. If people can not understant that responsibility, then democracy in not for that place. In the US, people understand their duties as a citizen and therefore democracy flourish here. In Nepal, people need to be educated first about the democracy. The only thing we can hope for at this time is that this king would be a patriotic dictator who will think about his fellow citizen. Can you imagine what would have happened at this very moment if this same coup had come from the Maoists?

Dictator is dictatior. He already makes over 67 crores per year. He has already swallowed King B's wealth. He will probably sell Nirmal Niwas to Nepal Government for undisclosed amount of money. The army of Nepal, they are probably the most corrupt of them all. They were charging money to transport companies while Maoist called for Nakabandi. - http://www.petition.com/CoupKing/petition.html

Dictator is a dictator but not all dictators are bad. Singapore is run by a dictator. People are happy there. Look at the US, it is not run by a dictator, but 49% of people are extremely unhappy. Many of them are thinking about moving to Canada. The point is we need to give this king a chance, since we have seen all the corrupt political leaders.

i don't get this thing about nepali people being not educated enough for democracy. that is bullshit. and for all of them who think that, is 12 years enough of a time to get a population "educated" enough for democracy??? and the US does have democracy now and there is a lot of education here. but think 100-200 years ago. how educated were the people? they still had democracy. i think we are all just sissies. yes-men. always saying yes to the strong men, whether it be the maoists or the king. let's put an end to this. let's stand up to all this bullying. anyone?

i don't think it's the level of education. it's knowing what is right and what is wrong. it's knowing that you are elected to a position of responsibility rather than a position of power. it's a cultural thing. look at singapore and japan. there is little/no corruption because ppl are honest and responsible. the last generation of leaders such as makune, chikuwa, and girije created a culture of greed and irresponsibility. eventually we need to reinstitutionalize democracy in nepal, but we need honest and competent leaders so that the second time around, we actually get it right. until then, we just have to wait and be patient and let the king do what needs to be done. as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Mr. Tired, I don't know if you have seen a movie "Gods Must Be Crazy I". In that movie, this African indegeniuos person finds a coke bottle. He finds many uses of this coke bottle but does not really know what the bottle is actually used for. Same thing with democray in Nepal. People find something called "Democracy". They used it for all purposes - breaking the side bars in Ratna park, putting cars in fire, killing people, horse trading to remain in power. But they never found what it really is. And you can spend another two centuries trying to figure out what democracy really is and you would not find the right answer, as long as you don't change your perspective. And that is where education comes in - to change your perspective.

hmmm, that is interesting. culture. but i don't buy that there is no corruption in singapore or japan. i guess we could put south korea in the same category of rich or getting-there countries. south korea is plagued with corruption. there have been many many corruption cases in japan. and singapore. well, i just don't know enough but i mean, its a dictatorship. even if tehre was anything, it would be smothered. i was just wondering though, why are we so irresponsible? why?

but we lost patience in 12 years. we didn't wait enough for the perspective to change. and i don't think it is something we can't learn in 200 years. but whatever, i guess that is your view. but, i strongly disagree with your assessment of the movie. it is one of the most disparaging movies i have ever seen. i think we are all humans. and we can learn everything. fine that african man did not know what that bottle was cause he had never seen it. but why make fun of that? why look down on him for that? i think it is equally good that he finds uses for it. that movie is just another step to reinforce the idea that the westerners, the white people descended from europe are morally, mentally, ethically superior to everyone else. and i for one, happen to think that is bullshit.

Please don't get me wrong. In no way, I was trying to look down upon that person. I was trying to point out how difficult it was for him to find the real use of the coke bottle. It is just an example. And it is not his fault that he was not able to find the real use of the bottle. Same thing with Nepalese people. It is probably not their fault that they could not find out what democracy is. It is actually the leaders fault. They should have explained it, they should have used it as an example so that people could change their perspective. That never happened. As far as the movie is concerned, I don't think it degrades any human race. I just think the movie represents the human ignorance. The opposite of what was shown in this movie could be equally funny. You find something from indeginuous culture and you have no idea what it is.

tired, " there have been many many corruption cases in japan. and singapore. " i don't know if you can compare the level of corruption in japan and singapore with that in nepal. but as you yourself pointed out, these corruption incidents make it into the news, and eventually into the courtrooms. in nepal, everyone knows that it exists, but no-one is held accountable. everyone gets away with it, and corruption continues... democracy nepal ma baadar ko haat ma naaribal jaastai bha cha. we need to learn to truly appreciate democracy

You need to understand that these sayings should not be taken literally or out of context. nepali janata baadar hainan, tara prajatantra hamro haatma baadarko haatma naaribal jhai bhayo... i need to take off before some witchhunnters start coming after my ass...peace..
