We might be mixed with Chinese or some Orientals, bcoz we look oriental , not not all of us ... so half of us mite be mixed with dhoteez too .... and some mite be a mix betn chinese and dhoteez .... anywayz, no matter how newarz originated, we are aritistic and creative and talented .... one of the well mannered goups of nepal , culturally rich and makes best dishes ... what i don't like is old newari budhis , who are very conservative, and think that we sud only look other newarz for our spouse ... we sud mix so that this world will be even more interesting ...

Newari language and food is so similar to chinese, koren, japanese; also their looks are similar. I would guess that their origin is from North-China/Tibet. But I am sure someone here who has done formal education on the topic would be able to teach us. I find it very interesting that Newars of Kathmandu are so different from Newars from outside the valley. Growing up, I used to love going to Newari friends wedding parties. Hot chicks, good food and very good chang or tharra :)

You guys might want to read the book "People of Nepal" by Dor Bahadur Bista. It has described origins of almost all the Nepalese ethnic groups including Newars. I tried to copy and paste the whole section on Newars; however, sajha only permits upto 6000 characters. Anyways, if you have time, take a look in your local libraries. Let me give a preview... Note: The following excerpt about the Newars has been directly taken from the book called "People of Nepal" by Dor Bahadur Bista. The Newar people are the indigenous inhabitants of the valley of Kathmandu. They are the people seen in the greatest numbers in the capital city, and they are found in great numbers in every market town and village in the outlying districts, the hills and the Terai. They are small shopkeepers, big businessmen, importers, exporters, farmers, craftsmen and so on. Among them you will find artisans and caste groups ranging from the lowest to the highest, from sweeper to priest, both Buddhist and Hindu. They are a unique and interesting people, and one of the oldest known groups in Nepal. ... Because of the complexities in the composition of Newar society, scholars in the past have developed various interesting theories about their origins. The Newari language, although greatly influenced by Sanskrit, is still distinctly a Tibeto-Burman tongue. Thanks, Six Strings

Yes u are right Dananah! Why we should talk much about the origin of any cast!! who cares about it, everyone now wants to get green card or Citizenship of a developed nation. And i guess its human nature to migrate to a place of opportunity and it is historically a fact that human always liked to travel into different places. The national or geopolitical boundaries can not stop human from migrating and assimilating with other populations. In that course different nationality arised and if u start to look at their origin than probably you would find a complete mess. If u trace back to the history, all Nepali are either from some part of present India-Pakistan (Aryan) and from Tibet (who look like Mongolian, here also i don't want to use this kind of word Aryan and Mongolian, i hate the differences that are artificially being blended in using these words). I have another example, Late king Tribhuban (good height, long nose) looked like real Aryan but his grandson late king Dherandra looked more like a Mongolian (relatively short and nose similar to magnolias). You know it all about the assimilation of genes and i think Nepali are the mixtures of different gene combination from Aryan, Mongolian and Drabid. It may be due to that we are relatively healthier and physically good. Isn?t it that make a good sense!!!! Nut

Newar is not a cast, it is a culture. That is why we have several casts inside newars, like bharman in newar (eg. shakya etc.. and lower caste like japu and maharjan...) The origin of newars can be associated with south indians. for eg. in every religious occasion newar needs Supari(beetle nut) same as in south india. there is now way you can get supari in kathmandu. there are other numerous example as well, but i can't think of those now, i need to get out and showel this nor-easter... and there is nothing wrong about knowing your roots...

Yeah newars do look like Hispanic... some look like Chinese some like Indians (like Bangali) ... Chetris and Bahuns too to some extent look like Hispanic; some of them look like Caucasians, with long thin noses with a steep mountain between their eyes. Newars are not always Vaishyas, as many people think. Before Junga Bahadur or so, Newari samaj was a complete HINDU community, with all four castes within it. Still there are Newar Barmu (Karmacharya, Gurubacharya, Bajrachrya), a Newar verion of Brahmin but with Newari as their mother tongue. A s you know Pradhan, Shrestha, Malla, Maskey are 'Chetris' and Tuladhar, Shakya, Manandhar, Tamrakar, Singh, Maharjan, are Vaishyas with buinessmen with occupation ranging from farmers, carpenters, blacksmiths to technicians, artists, builders. Junga Bahadur is the guy who illegalized the use of Newar in offices.

Nut bro, you are really nuts... Knowing an origin of anything is an ultimate discovery to understand oneself. You are right in one thing, yes most of us are trying to get GC or citizenships in developed countries, but that would never change who you are. Getting GC or citizenshipe only change your "Nationality" not your culture. Even if you settle down in Mars, you will still be "Nepali Martian". As I said earlier, most of U guys need to read the book "People of Nepa" by Dor Bahadur Bista.

My understanding was that Newars first established village was in Panauti. Then they migrated to Kathmandu and to some other places from there on. Also, during or before Malla dynasty, there was no caste called Newar as such. There were many different groups of people with their own surname. But the king (probably Jaysthiti Malla) designated everybody as Newar and segregated further according to what he learned of Hinduism Sanatan Dharma from bahuns of the south (Indians). For the first part, he was wise. For that second part, he became an eternal dumbass.
