Just finished "GURU OF LOVE", one of the most unrealistic novels Ive ever read, especially Goma's character.

It took whole 8 months to complete it, but Samrat's style of writing is terrific.

I am sorry to inform you that lolita and reading lolita in Tehran are two entirely different books.
Lolita was written by Vladimir Nabokov and is a classic .If you want to know what a classic is ,read that book and none else.

others worth reading

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy (forget the movie-the book is what counts)
anything by Paul Theraux
to kill a mockingbird
anything by graham greene
Zen and the art of motorcycle maintainence- old but timeless
and
meera said no sidney sheldon or harry potter type (why,I wonder)-sorry to inform you nirma, its a sidney sheldon book.
please remember there is nothing worse than intellectual snobbery-all books are good in their own way- apart from really bad one-but again they stink as soon as you pick them up.

"Lolita" is written by Vladimir Nabokov. "Reading Lolita in Tehran" has an analogy of Iran being raped by the revolution, hence the reference to "Lolita". You don't have to read "lolita" to understand the latter. It's just an analogy.

The art of Humbert's narration is that he reels in the reader ias an unsuspecting voyeur and therefore a partner in the crime. The fact remains, Lolita was a minor and defenceless.

I know Humbert which his handsome european looks and a (finally) shaved chest is the culprit, but Nabakov's skill is to tell us the story through the lustful, moaning, miserable, misanthropic (for anyone not a cherubim) eyes of Humbert such that we get enticed by the story- get carried away through all the Highways of the US and see visions of young America seducing old Europe ( I know you see old Europe seducing the young american continent) but thats what is amazing about the book

Amazing you are amazingly crass
do you know the word amazing comes from a- mazon meaning without breast?

An early group of explorers to south america reported (17-18th century) they had seen tribes run by giant women in the forests. The males helped at home. The ladies were the warriors , sported bows and arrows and had their breast of thier (arrow) drawing hand cut off to faciliate quicker discharge of the arrows. The tribe ( never seen since then) was named the Amazons - the whole forest (jungle?) was called the Amazon and so was the river which passed through the forest.
Btw amazia is a real medical condition as well- congenital bascence of breast

I suppose Nabokov shows the fine line between obsession, abuse and love where the abuser believes himself to be madly in love with the 12 year old. Humbert leaves one with a taste of horror and fascination in his pervert pursuit of Lolita.

Anyways, Meera, read both books if you have the time. Nafisi will pull you in with her vivid narration.
